History
When the Pastor Rev Justin arrived in Canada in November 31st 2000, he started African Bible studies at the Guest house. After moved to Wolever Avenue, he attended African fellowship congregation lead by Pastor James Okot whom I knew him in AIC in Torit Juba South Sudan.
In 2003, Late Archbishop Joseph Marona visited Canada, and he meet with Bishop of the Diocese of Rupert’s Land. In the meeting, Late marona expressed his concerns for Justin to open an Anglican Church in Canada to initiate and cooperate between the Diocese and the Episcopal Church of Sudan. Both Late Archbishop Marona and Bishop agreed for a missional ministry to be opened here in Manitoba, Justin should come to Diocesan office monthly for if any correspondence or not.
I came to Canada with letters of Recommendations from the Bishop of Cairo Egypt and handed to Jim Draper Rector All Saints Parish. I was assigned to assist Rector John at St Patrick and Jude which was closed to home, however, as the attendees were dropping rapidly, the Parish was closed, and I moved back to All Saints.
The family of late Bishop Manase B Dawidi of (ECS) the diocese of kajokeji attended St Saviour Parish, and they have the same motives for a missional Church. Both groups met with the Rector of St Saviour if he can allow us to worship at St saviour, however, the Rector gave us space for worship.
We opened the missional Church on September 27, 2003, led by Justin Laki and Augustino Perino. The bishop visited the congregation and informed us during the meeting that he will ordain one person within the group and that person should be within an Anglican background.
After the Bishop left, Augustino Perino becomes unhappy with Bishop’s idea to ordained only a member within Anglican background. According to another group, they wanted Augustino to be ordained as a senior pastor and Justin laki to be an assistant. He makes a lot of problems and wanted to call for a police officer, but all members avoided him, he left the Church and moved to another Province.
In the same 2003, we received 300 plus Anglican members arrived from Ippo,(Dinka tribe) and they don’t know the way to Anglican church. Justin assist transported them every Sundays to St Savior Anglican Parish for two months to joined us to worship together. Our missional church was led by Late Bishop Patrick Lee, and the new arrival complained that they don’t know Arabic even English they would like to worship in Dinka language. Late Bishop Lee visited St Mathew A Parish looking for space for worship, but the diocesan bishop called for a meeting at All saints between the new arrivals (Dinka) and the existed congregation.
The bishop asked if we both can worship together and provided translation on each service, but the newly group rejected Bishop’s ideas said they wanted to worship in their own mother tongue, whether Bishop like it or not they got space at St Mathew Parish, and they left.
The Congregation faced transportation difficulties, therefore in 2004 the group met Jim Draper Rector of All saints if he can allow us a space. Jim Accepted and we started our services at All Saints on November 27th, 2004, time at 1 pm after English services. We, therefore, formed a church council, youth ministry, Sunday School ministry, prison and Hospital ministry, women ministry, pastoral team, Sponsorship team, and others.
We called for a meeting chaired by the diocesan bishop and named our missional Church to be called St Andrew Anglican Mission (Sudanese Community Church) 175 Colony Street. We applied for Charitable number and immediately we got it in a short period of time, then we developed a church profile and stewardship for the growth of the mission to make use of our different gifts. AS the Bible said, “Each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1Peter 4:10)
Stewardship programs are all about our relationship with God, to one another, and how we serve him, how we offer him our talents, gift, time, and treasury.
As so far, we have contributed time, talent, and treasure in many ways that each person is doing at St Andrew Anglican mission such as: choir music, Sunday services and sermons, women fellowship bible study, wedding, Baptism, confirmation, annual celebrations as mothers and fathers’ days, Christmas, and Easter services and all other community services memorial services and happy services.
After school program:
As the Church grew, one of the pastors’ concerns is about the Immigrants Children learning after arrival to Canada:
- They were enrolled to class based on age
- Others never been to school
- Others studied Arabic
- Others doesn’t know English at all
The Rev Justin Laki was a member of Immigration council and member of Interfaith Welcome Place, he sends volunteers to Welcome place especially those from South Sudan (Dinka by tribe). Rev Justin meets with Late Martin Dolyl and raised concerns to have after school program to help African Immigrants children from their leaning.
Late Martin told Rev Laki to get ready for presentations in the schools especially at Gordon Bell High school to create After school program for African Children in all levels. The first presentation was in Gordon Bell H school, and Rev Laki asked a question to the principal of the school that who is the decision maker in this school?
It becomes a topic, the school council was in limbo with the question raised, and the second presentation was in Winnipeg educational board. Late martin in support of the project and he connected us for a meeting with neighborhood alive and funded the after-school program for two years.
Through welcome place, we shared and interviewed applicants for the position of Coordinator and its assistant. The coordinator was hired jointly between Church and Welcome place, while the assistant coordinator was hired by coordinator. The project was supposed to be reported through the church and the Church forwarded to the funders. But the reporting didn’t go the way we agreed upon between welcome place who hosted the project because of liability the project ended in two years no going forward.
